Evac improves safety at Russian cancer care centre

Evac is supplying a vacuum drainage system for Khimki hospital near Moscow which specializes in the treatment of patients with cancer.  The equipment will be installed at the oncological outpatient diagnostic centre at Khimki hospital which is due for completion in the summer of 2020. Our partner in the project is Radioisotope Device LLC, which is a supplier of entire wastewater handling system.

During treatment, patients receive Iodine 131, a radioactive source, which cannot be discharged into the public sewer until it has been depleted which can take as long as 3 months. This means that storage tanks have to be installed to hold the wastewater until the radioactivity has decreased to an acceptable level.

“The use of vacuum technology has a number of advantages because it significantly reduces the amount of water used each time a toilet is flushed. Therefore, fewer storage tanks are required resulting in a considerable cost saving during construction”, said Alexandre Matikainen, Evac’s Area Sales Manager.

In addition to saving space by having fewer, smaller storage tanks the vacuum system ensures there are no leakages in the sewer system which is an important safety factor. Beyond this, vacuum toilets improve sustainability of the building as well as the general level of hygiene which is crucial in a hospital environment.

“We have been carrying out similar projects for many years and have good relationships with our local partners in Russia. Also, companies have to be approved by the local authority to undertake these contracts and we hold the necessary certification”, Alexandre Matikainen concluded.
